The “Fancy Intense Pink”, the world’s most expensive pink diamond ever
A new auction record
A “Fancy Intense Pink” diamond was sold for $46.2 million at Sotheby’s, Geneva, on last Tuesday, 16th November, 2010. Valued by the auction house between $27 million and $38 million, the bidding has wiped out all expectations even though it had not been on the gem market for over 60 years.
A magnificent gem
This diamond weighs 24.78 carats and has been certified “Fancy Intense Pink” by the Gemological Institute of America, and classified “IIa”– a classification that concerns less than 2% of the world natural diamonds. The gem is also considered as one of the most beautiful diamond in the world for its exceptional color and purity (the GIA has classified it has VVS2 – Very Very Slightly Included). Mounted as a ring, it is emerald-cut, a style of cutting generally reserved to white diamonds.
A renowned owner
The new owner of this extravagant jewelry piece is the billionaire Laurence Graff, crowned as “King of Bling” by Forbes in 2007 and “the new Harry Winston” this year. King of the record-breaking auction also fits well: he bought the famous grey-blue Wittelsbach diamond in 2008 for $24 million. For sure, his wife has great best friends!
