Cartier Milestones
1847 Louis-François Cartier takes over his master’s jewelry workshop located 29 rue Montorgueil in Paris and creates the House of Cartier.
1888 First wristwatches for women.
1899 Cartier moves to 13 rue de la Paix. The Cartier brothers, Louis, Pierre and Jacques, travel around the world to develop the business.
1902 Opening of the Cartier’s London branch.
1904 Proclaimed official supplier to the Royal Court of England.
Creation of the Santos watch for the aviator Santos-Dumont, the first men’s wristwatch.
1909 Opening of the New York branch.
1911 Louis Cartier launches the first mystery clock, an extraordinary know-how kept secret ever since by Cartier.
1917 Creation of the Tank watch.
1919 Foundation of a joint company with Jaeger; the European Watch and Clock company, to produce movements.
1920 Launch of the Trinity ring.
1933 Jeanne Toussaint, Director of Fine Jewelry.
1957 Creation of the Baignoire watch.
1960 Launch of the LOVE jewelry line.
1964 Pierre Cartier passes away. The Paris, London and New York branches are sold out.
1972 Cartier Paris is bought by a group of investors led by Joseph Kanoui.
1974 Buys back Cartier London.
1976 Buys back Cartier New York.
1979 Foundation of Cartier World, part of the Richemont holdings.
Alain Dominique Perrin is named CEO and launches “les Must” by Cartier.
1983 Creation of the Panther watch.
1984 Foundation of the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain.
1985 Creation of the Pasha de Cartier.
1997 150th anniversary of the House of Cartier.
2007 Cartier Love campaign "How far would you go for Love?".
2009 Revamp of “les Must” by Cartier.
